Picture of the Month – January 2011
It’s been a long time since I’ve had the KLR650 out on a long dirt ride, but with some good weather after weeks of rain, I figured it would be a good time to photograph some of the local streams. So I did one of my favorite loops, going up to Kneeland. It actually ends up being more of a figure 8 going up Redwood House Rd. and coming back down Shower Pass Road.
There were several beautiful spots that I found to photograph, but this was one of my favorites. I loved the color of the huge boulder sitting in the middle of the stream. It provides great contrast to the lush green foliage that surrounds the creek.

January was the usual rainy mess that Humboldt County experiences most years. The new year rang in with our yard flooded by Williams Creek, and the month ended with our yard under water once again. In between it was one storm after another. So needless to say, I didn’t have many opportunities to go out and take photos.
I did manage to get out a couple of times on the KLR650. This photo came from the first trip I made, up to Kneeland. Just as I got up to the ridge I could see the fog quickly rolling in from the ocean. My descent down the mountain was a lot slower and colder.

I met Valerie at the fair, while she was staffing the Humboldt Creamery booth next to ours. Performing her dairy princess duties quite admirably, she had a smiling face and cheerful disposition the entire fair, which is more than I can say for myself. We spent an afternoon up at her parent’s ranch photographing her in several spots that she picked out. One was an old International flatbed truck that was slowly returning back to nature. We brought the vintage clothing, and she brought along the sunflowers which added just the right punctuation to her already sunny disposition.
