Sinkyone ElkPicture of the Month - December 2007 |

With a beautiful fall day ending up on a weekend, it was time to forget the chores that needed to be done around the house and go out and explore the wonderful scenery of the North Coast. I had recently read about the elk at Siskyone Wilderness State Park and so we picked that as our target. Since it was going to take a fair amount of 4-wheeling to get out to Siskyone, I was really hoping we'd get a chance to view the elk or the missus would probably be upset at me. Well, we lucked out. We did catch up with the herd, and they seemed to be traveling in the opposite direction so that on the way back they were parked between us and our truck. We slowly made our way back to the truck, thinking at some point they would spook and a path would be cleared. They all seemed to be pretty happy munching on the grass and so as we made our way through the herd I was able to get some pretty close up shots. Still, knowing that they are wild animals, with sharp pointy parts that could take you out in an instant, I didn't spend more time than necessary getting each shot. This one was my favorite though, a perfect pose, and the open mouth made it look like he had something to say. ![]() |
