Picture of the Month – May 2013
A few years ago I planted some Red Hot Pokers in the backyard, and this species was pretty, but then I saw some that were bi-colored, and I liked those much better. So with permission, I dug up and transplanted a few to put in the border in our rose garden. This spring they bloomed for the first time, and in addition to looking lovely, they seemed to be a favorite of the local hummingbirds.
After the major flooding our yard received this year, the red hot pokers provided a bright spot in an otherwise dismal looking yard. Since they were reliably attracting hummingbirds, I figured it would be a good time to try capturing one in flight. Although I’m not a birder by any means, I do love watching the various birds that come into our yard, and try to identify them the best I can.
From looking at online photos, I believe this to be a female Anna’s hummingbird. I’m sure someone more knowledgeable will correct me if I’m wrong.
