This image was scanned from a glass plate, and it’s not uncommon to see them broken as this one was. Fortunately both pieces were still around, and it was just a matter of digitally patching the area of the break. Like most glass plate negatives, the image also required an adjustment to the contrast to get the most detail out of it.
This is what 34 horsepower looked like in the 19th century. At least we think that’s how many horses there are pulling the thresher. Kind of hard to make out how many there are in the front two rows as the depth of field left them out of focus.
